Pneumatics
Pneumatics Skills modules
This group of modules examines how pneumatics uses compressed air to make things move. Each module in this competency group builds on the one before it, giving you confidence as you develop your knowledge in a way that is logical and intuitive.
Introduction to Pneumatics
This module reviews the industrial and commercial applications of pneumatics as well as their advantages in the manufacturing process (Estimated completion time: 1.3 hours).
Pneumatic Systems
This module explains how pneumatic systems are designed to produce and deliver compressed air. Upon completion of this module, you will be able to describe how the air is compressed, cleaned, cooled, and treated before it is delivered to a mechanical device (Estimated completion time: 1.3 hours).
The Properties of Gases
This module explains how, as a gas, air behaves with changes in pressure, temperature, and volume. Upon completion, you will be able to describe the impact of these changes and how they work together in a pneumatic system (Estimated completion time: 1.8 hours).
Air Compression and Distribution – Part One
Upon completion of this module, you will be able to explain the purpose of an air compressor, the different methods of air compression, and the purpose and elements of an air receiver (Estimated completion time: 1.9 hours).
Air Compression and Distribution – Part Two
The purpose of this module is to show you how air is first cooled, dried, and filtered, then distributed through a network of pipes and fittings. Upon completion, you will be able to explain the purpose and methods used to dehydrate and filter air, and how a distribution system is engineered and built (Estimated completion time: 1.5 hours).
Compressed Air Treatment
This module examines the specialized devices used to filter, lubricate, and regulate pressure of compressed air. Upon completion of this module, you will be able to list types of air treatments, air filters, pressure regulators, and lubricators (Estimated completion time: 1.4 hours).
Pneumatic Actuators
This module explains how pneumatic actuators use compressed air to create mechanical motion. Upon completion of this module, you will be able to list the primary types of actuators, explain the workings of a linear cylinder and rotary actuator, and describe the purpose of an air gripper (Estimated completion time: 2.4 hours).
Directional Control Valves
This module describes how directional control valves are used to simplify the job of controlling air flow to multiple pneumatic devices. Upon completion, you will be able to explain how a directional control valve works, list various types, and classify them by the manner in which they are actuated (Estimated completion time: 1.8 hours).
Vacuum Technology
This module explains the differences between vacuum technology and pneumatics. Upon completion of this module, you will be able to understand the physical laws used in vacuum technology, explain how a vacuum is generated, list different types along with the various components and symbols associated with this technology (Estimated completion time: 2.1 hours).
Measuring Pneumatic Variables
Upon completion of this module, you will be able to explain pressure and flow, and list the instruments used to measure them (Estimated completion time: 1.3 hours).
Pneumatic Applications
This module is designed to teach you how to build and operate several pneumatic and electro-pneumatic systems. Upon completion, you will be able to draw and assemble basic electro-pneumatic circuits (Estimated completion time: 1.8 hours).
