Material Skills Modules

This group of modules outlines the various types of materials in the manufacturing process and how to use them. Each module in this competency group builds on the one before it, giving you confidence as you develop your knowledge in a way that is logical and intuitive.

Introduction to Metals

This module is designed to teach you about the properties of metals used in products and choosing manufacturing processes. Upon completion, you will be able to explain how metal, nonmetal, and metalloid elements will be combined to form metal alloys; describe the mechanical properties of metals, including strength, toughness, ductility, malleability, brittleness, and hardness; and explain how metal parts are formed and how mechanical properties affect metal forming (Estimated completion time: 1.1 hours).

Ferrous Metals

After completing this module, you will be able to compare the composition, properties, and uses of cast, wrought, pig iron, plain carbon, alloy, stainless, and tool steels. Further, you will be able to identify elements used in iron and steel alloys and the properties they enhance (Estimated completion time: 0.9 hours).

Nonferrous Metals

After completing this module, you will be able to compare the composition, properties, and uses of aluminum, titanium, copper, magnesium, and nickel alloys; identify alloying elements used in nonferrous metals and the properties they enhance; and list common uses for nonferrous metals (Estimated completion time: 0.8 hours).

Heat Treatment of Metals

This module is designed to explain how the controlled heating and cooling of metals will increase machinability and performance. Upon completion, you will be able to compare annealing, normalizing, and tempering, as well as different methods of hardening metals, along with heat treatment methods that will be used on various steels and steel alloys (Estimated completion time: 1.1 hours).
