Measurement Tools Skills Modules

This group of modules outlines the various types of precision measurement tools used in the manufacturing process and how to use them. Each module in this competency group builds on the one before it, giving you confidence as you develop your knowledge in a way that is logical and intuitive.

Precisions Measurement Instruments I

Introduction to Precision Instruments

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to explain the difference between precision and accuracy, identify the basic components and resolution of a precision instrument, and determine the discrimination of a precision instrument (Estimated completion time: 1.1 hours).

Rules

This module is designed to help you develop the mastery required to accurately measure with a rule (Estimated completion time: 1.1 hours).

Calipers

This module is designed to help you develop the mastery required to accurately measure with calipers (Estimated completion time: 1.3 hours).

Micrometers

This module is designed to help you develop the mastery required to accurately measure products with a micrometer (Estimated completion time: 1.9 hours).

Precision Measurement Instruments II

Small Hole Gauges

After completing this module, you will be prepared to identify all of the parts of a small hole gauge, describe how they work together, and use it to accurately measure a diameter and width (Estimated completion time: 0.8 hours).

Dial Indicators

Dial indicators are able to measure distances that are impossible to see with the naked eye. This module is designed to teach you how to differentiate between a balanced and a long-range of dial indicator, list the tool’s major components, and use it to perform a measurement (Estimated completion time: 1.2 hours).

Bore Gauges

This module is designed to detect size deviations and shape defects of holes, bore gauges are used to ensure that holes meet engineering specifications. Upon completion of this module, you will be able to identify various types of bore gauges and their major components, and demonstrate how to use one (Estimated completion time: 1.6 hours).

Height Gauges

This module is designed to help you develop the mastery required to accurately measure with a height gauge (Estimated completion time: 1.1 hours).

Go/NoGo Gauges

This module is designed to inspect product features when a variable measurement is not necessary, Go/NoGo gauges make inspections faster and more efficient. This module is designed to teach you how to properly and accurately use the tool (Estimated completion time: 0.9 hours).

Test Indicators

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to use this tool to determine form, shape, and positional deviations (Estimated completion time: 1.1 hours).

Go/NoGo Thread Gauges

After completing this module, you will be able to use this tool to inspect the form of a threaded hole (Estimated completion time: 1.4 hours).

Attribute Gauges

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to use this tool to inspect the size or function of a product characteristic (Estimated completion time: 1 hour).

Precision Measurement Instruments III

Thickness and Radius Gauges

This module is designed to teach you how to use this tool to accurately measure gaps or rounded corners of work pieces (Estimated completion time: 1 hour).

Squares and Protractors

This module is designed to teach you how to use these tools to ensure squareness and accurate angles (Estimated completion time: 1.3 hours).

Surface Roughness Comparators

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to identify the characteristics of surface texture, components of the surface texture symbol, and a surface texture symbol on an engineering drawing (Estimated completion time: 1 hour).

Adjustable Parallels

After completing this module, you will be able to list the parts of this tool and use it with a dial caliper to measure the width of a slot (Estimated completion time: 0.7 hours).

Surface Plates

This module is designed to teach you how to use and care for this instrument so you will obtain accurate and precise measurements (Estimated completion time: 0.9 hours).

Optical Comparators

Upon completion of this module, you will be capable of listing the components of an optical comparator and explain how they work together to create an enlarged image (Estimated completion time: 0.9 hours).

Optical Center Finders

The purpose of this module is to teach you how to use this tool to align a drill bushing with scribed hole location lines on a part (Estimated completion time: 0.8 hours).

Fastener Inspection Gauges

Grip Gauges

This module is designed to teach you how to use this gauge to measure material thickness to establish the proper fastener length when fastening two pieces of material together (Estimated completion time: 0.8 hours).

Countersink Gauges

This module is designed to teach you how to use this gauge to measure the diameter of the top of a countersink (Estimated completion time: 1.3 hours).

Fastener Height Gauges

The purpose of this module is to teach you how to measure the distance from a countersunk fastener head to the surface of the material it is fastening (Estimated completion time: 0.8 hours).

Rivet Inspection Gauges

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to use this tool to ensure that an installation meets engineering requirements (Estimated completion time: 0.9 hours).

Fastener Inspection Gauges

Upon completion of this module, you will be able to use this tool to accurately measure fasteners with fastener gauges (Estimated completion time: 1.3 hours).

Gap Inspection Gauges

This module is designed to teach you how to use this gauge to measure the space between two assembled components (Estimated completion time: 1.7 hours).

Weld Gauges

After completing this module, you will be able to use this gauge to measure various weld dimensions and discontinuities (Estimated completion time: 2.2 hours).
